I always tell clients that a pair of dark denim jeans in the right fit are a great way to move the needle from weekend to work.  First, the dark color will always make legs look longer.  Second, they are closer to dress pants because they don’t immediately scream “jeans.”

Here is an analysis of three looks based on the same jeans, shell and heeled booties.

What works:

  • The color flow of all three outfits makes my silhouette appear tall and thin.
  • The shapes of each outfit work to make my rectangle shape more like an hourglass.
  • The lightweight wool sweater in the third photo is a lean, sophisticated look.
  • A statement necklace like the one shown in the middle photo helps to draw attention to my face – which is where I want people’s attention.

What could be better:

  • The green jacket in the first photo is not my best shade of green – it is a pine green and I work better with an emerald green – so it is more visible than my face.
  • The green jacket works from the arm pits on down with the shape and vertical lines the front of the jacket creates, but it is too stiff and enclosed for my shoulders, neck and face.

Summary:

  • The third look is a winner – it’s tall, lean and sophisticated.
  • The jacket from the first look is a candidate for the donate pile.  I will keep it until I replace it with another corduroy jacket for a great casual look.

The base for each outfit is DKNY’s SOHO bootcut jeans purchased from Macy’s petites.  The shell is Jones New York from Marshall’s.  The brown booties with a 2″ heel are Donald J Pliner purchased from Macy’s last year.  The coral necklace in the first and third photos is from Macy’s and the statement necklace in the middle photo is from Target.

Jacket #1 is Jones New York from Macy’s.  Jacket #2 is from Nordstrom.  The sweater is from Banana Republic.  All tops are petite and were purchased from previous collections.
