Smart Casual for Fall from the Fabuliss Closet Part 3 of 4…Dress Pants +

When it comes to dressing up, a fine knit dress pant in the right cut can go a long way.  These brown pants are a great neutral that goes with a variety of options.

What works:

  • A pretty ruffle is a great way to add femininity to a corporate look.
  • Wearing the lightest color on the inside of a dark layer is a taller and leaner look than if I had done the reverse.
  • A heeled bootie with my pants hemmed correctly (about half way down the heel) helps add length to my legs.
  • A strong top layer – like the first two jackets – works best with a structured shirt.
  • An untucked shirt that is barely longer than the jacket in a high-contrast color works OK on my shape but would NOT work if you have large hips compared to your bust and shoulders.
  • A simple necklace that hits just above the shirt’s neckline works best with the ruffled shirt.
  • The ruffles on the shirt draw a vertical line down the front of me and help to slim and elongate.

What could be better:

  • The short sweater in photo #3 does not work as well as the jackets because the shirt overpowers.  It’s possible that if the shirt was tucked in it could work.

  • The first two outfits are great.  I would slightly favor the first look because the leather jacket is more streamlined than the denim jacket.
  • No items to donate here!

The base for each outfit is a Jones New York Collection poly/wool blend purchased from Macy’s petites.  The ruffle shirt is from a past line of Ann Taylor LOFT.  The coral necklace is from Macy’s.

Jacket #1 is from Nordstrom.  Jacket #2 is from Talbots.  The sweater is from Banana Republic.  All tops are petite and were purchased from previous collections.
