The Draped Cardigan…Dos and Don’ts For Different Body Shapes

March 4, 2011

Draped Sweater Dos and Don'ts

If we are lucky, the draped cardigan will be here to stay.  In many ways, I love these more than a simple cardigan because more people can wear them.  That said, there are so many styles that it’s about selecting the right one.

At the end of the day, the best option will provide a balanced shape to the body while draping gracefully in the right places.

The two examples above show the same cardigan in two different colors on two different people.  Continue reading to find out which one is Fabuliss approved.

DRAPED CARDIGAN : DO THIS

The examples above work for different body shapes based on how they fit each body.  A few additional do’s to keep in mind:

  • A longer sweater can be more flattering on women who carry weight in the belly area.
  • Look in a 3-way mirror to ensure the back fits and is shaped to fit your curves.
  • The sweater should drape and lay well against the body and other clothing and not “stick” or wrinkle.
  • Pair with the right first layer – whether it is cotton, silk or satin – for the best drape.
  • When possible, opt for color over defaulting to black.

DRAPED CARDIGAN: DON’T DO THIS

Draped Sweaters: Don't Do This

The examples pictured above don’t do any of the beautiful models any favors.  Avoid these mistakes:

  • Hiding out in a piece of clothing should be reserved for inside your home on a day that important people will definitely not be stopping by.
  • While some of these looks might look appealing from a comfort standpoint, they are not made to flatter.

QUICK REVIEW

Draped Sweater Review

Now that you have seen examples of what works and what does not, let’s look at these draped cardigans again.  Fabuliss approves the cardigan on the left for several reasons:

  • The high contrast vertical stripes create a slim and tall silhouette.
  • The horizontal stripe and volume around the hips appears to balance out her shoulders and ruffle-enhanced bust.
  • The color works well with the model’s dark hair.

There are SO many options so if you don’t find what you are looking for in one store, keep looking until you find THE ONE.

There is nothing like getting a client into clothes that bring out the best, add to confidence and communicate the right messages.

From fit to color to style, the above looks are my top favorites on Mary.

A simple wardrobe that includes the right items creates so many possibilities for mixing and matching.

Above, we took a dark blue shirt and mixed it with jackets and sweaters for three different looks.

MIX & MATCH – WHITE SHIRT

A white shirt with a bold print could overwhelm and send off a message to stay away.  When paired with colorful jackets, the distinctive shirt helps Mary stand out in a crowded room.

Fabuliss Helps Mary, Part 2 – Fit & Color Recommendations

February 23, 2011

BEST FIT

Client Mary Wearing Different Jackets

A recent client, Mary, had no shortage of clothing and was looking for feedback on what fits and why.

The outfits above left and above right are the most successful with a few suggestions for improvement:

  • A shorter length for a 1st layer will help to lengthen the legs and hint at a waist.
  • More fitted translates to a taller, leaner look.

BEST COLORS

Color Stories That Work

{ click to enlarge }

You can have the best fit in the world but if the color does not work, you are sunk.

Fabuliss found the above color combinations to work beautifully for Mary.

  • The berry color mixed with grey matches her lip color and hair color.
  • Light grey compliments her hair color while the blue color of her jacket mimics her eyes.

In the wrong colors, Mary will look older than she is or people might see and only remember what she was wearing and not Mary.

MORE RECOMMENDATIONS

More outfits, evaluating color, texture & print

When it comes to color, print and texture together, there are a few tips and tricks to make it all work.

The above outfit examples show off a few dos and don’ts:

  • Do choose a print that is proportional to your height and width.
  • Do choose a sparkle or sheen in a dark color to feel glamorous without drawing too much attention to problem areas.
  • Do not feel the need to buy a color and wear it because it fits with a certain occasion, especially if it is not your best color.
  • Do mix and match colors.
  • Do not wear something if there is a high contrast horizontal stripe and you are petite and/or plus.

Stay tuned for the final installment of this 3-part series on Friday, February 25 2011.  We’ll look at mix and match ideas plus my picks for best of the best.
