Top Style Picks for the 2011 Academy Awards

WHAT STOOD OUT?

Fabuliss Oscar Picks 2011

There were four red carpet winners of the night.  From left to right, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Helen Mirren and Natalie Portman.

Silhouette is a major part of why I selected these picks.  Each one looks like an hourglass, whether they are one or not.  The fact that they’re simulating that body type is incredibly appealing.

The other reason these made the list is color.  While there could be a little improvement, overall they are on the right track.

WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?

All lovely ladies, these dress choices didn’t quite work.  Some were more off than others based on color, silhouette and texture.

LASTLY, A FEW WORDS ABOUT NUDE COLORS

Fabuliss Nude = Naked

I am not sure who decided nude tones were trend-worthy.  Based on these examples from the red carpet – Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Welch, Mandy Moore and Hallee Berry – the nude tones make the faces stand out but they look naked and almost corpse-like instead of vibrant and alive.

Click the photo above for detailed information regarding color, silhouette, texture and more.

Who were your favorites and what would you suggest for red carpet style?

People with black hair are on the cool end of the spectrum…and yes, they can wear black.

The examples above show how different temperatures look in black, from cool skin tones to warm.

Non-Black Alternatives

If you have black hair, choose colors that match your skin tone.  The cooler your skin, the cooler the colors you can choose.

Do:

  • Find colors that can pair with black to liven up a somber look
  • Try navy blue as an alternate to black in suits and formal wear

Avoid:

  • Too. Much. Black.
  • Faded colors that will wash your complexion out
  • Mixing warm or cool colors if your skin tone is the opposite

What’s Your Best Color? Hint: It’s Probably Not Black

January 7, 2011

Everyone in Black

This blog series, focused on alternatives to black, comes from my growing frustration around the amount of black apparel and accessories in stores and on people.

Unless you have black hair or a black base to your hair, black is not your best color.

Your best colors enhance your features while your worst colors can make you look older, more tired and sickly.

The next several blog posts will review the women pictured above, from Nordstrom.com and AnnTaylor.com, with a suggested alternate color based on basic hair, eye and skin color assessments.

The color assessments and suggestions apply to both women and men.

When you know and incorporate your best colors into outfits, you can use them to enhance your features, body shape, lifestyle and personality.
