Good Bye Ironing, Hello Steaming

April 8, 2011

I despise ironing.  No, really.  I have a huge list of things I would rather be doing than ironing.  And the lackluster results of a $50 iron and new ironing board are a constant reminder of my frustration.

A few years ago, I bought a handheld version and thought “wow, this is what all the buzz is about?”  Needless to say, the results were pretty awful.

But, I decided to keep an open mind and had more conversations with people who really love their steamers.

Enter, my new steamer, which arrived last week:

SteamFast SF-407 1500-Watt Fabric Steamer

What I love about this steamer:

  • It took me less than 5 minutes to unpack and set up.
  • The steamer heats up within 30 seconds, ready for use.
  • It has produced great results in a short amount of time with silk and cotton items.
  • It doesn’t take up an extraordinary amount of space (I have it set up in my bathroom, right by my closet).
  • It has a little spot for a hanger at the top to hang the item I am steaming.
  • It comes with a pad that serves as a mini board to steam against while protecting my hand from heat.
  • It has wheels so if I accidentally pull it, it moves instead of tipping.
  • Who doesn’t love (and completely believe) the Good Housekeeping seal of approval?!

Have a look at the SteamFast SF-407 1500-Watt Fabric Steamer on Amazon.com.

CBS Local/Minnesota – Best of Shopping Lists

March 21, 2011

I am so excited to be blogging for CBS Local!  And this has been an excellent excuse to get out and do what I do best – shop.

From local boutiques and shops to national chains, I am putting these lists together based on my personal experiences.  Whether it’s shopping undercover like a regular customer or talking to business owners, the Best Of lists are thanks to my car, my feet and Google Maps.

Here are the most recent Best of lists I put together:

And here are a few from the past:

    March 16, 2011

    Meet Client Jamie “Before”

Client Jamie’s husband bought her a gift certificate over the holidays because he knew Jamie was ready for change.

She was looking for clothing ideas that would work with her post-baby body, increase her style and give her ideas for what to invest in.

The outfit above is an example of a typical “before” – very casual, simple and youthful.  This outfit represents 99.9% of what was in Jamie’s every day closet.

    Found: “After” Outfits

As Jamie pulled out casual item after casual item, I kept looking at the other side of her room.  She had a pop-up closet that she unearthed for our closet appointment of things she used to wear before the birth of her child.

As it happens, many of the pieces in the pop-up closet were perfect to start incorporating immediately.  They included colors, more professional clothes and <gasp> a lot of style!

The outfit of above was a quick one we put together during our appointment – a dress shirt with ruching to enhance and camouflage key areas, a basic cotton cardigan and a great pair of lightweight dress pants.

As is common with many clients, Jamie already had pieces to use for outfit creation and learned how to pair and wear for outfits that met her objectives.

Based on what Jamie had and what she needed, I created a post-appointment list of items to shop for with a focus on color, structure and statement items.

And I included examples of how to the items for outfits that would give Jamie a more mature and professional presence for her job.

Jamie sent the photos above, showcasing what she’s been wearing since our appointment.

Using top layers, statement accessories and body-shape appropriate styles, Jamie looks Fabuliss!
