If you have black hair, choose colors that match your skin tone.  The cooler your skin, the cooler the colors you can choose.

Do:

  • Find colors that can pair with black to liven up a somber look
  • Try navy blue as an alternate to black in suits and formal wear

Avoid:

  • Too. Much. Black.
  • Faded colors that will wash your complexion out
  • Mixing warm or cool colors if your skin tone is the opposite

People with brown hair are on the warmer end of the spectrum.  Black roots, cool skin tones and blue eyes can quickly neutralize warmth while brown eyes and olive skin will add a lot of warmth.

The examples above show how different temperatures look in black. Brown hair with cool undertones or black roots can look good paired with black but there are always alternate options.

If you have brown hair, consider muted colors in medium-to-dark shades near your face.

Do:

  • Wear your eye color
  • Wear shades that are similar in contrast to your hair…the darker your hair, the darker shade you can wear

Avoid:

  • Bright colors that will overpower your features
  • Pastel colors that will wash your complexion out
  • Too cool of a palette – like all grey – unless you have a lot of grey in your hair and eyes

People with red and auburn hair can range from cool to warm depending on eye color and skin color.

The examples above show how different temperatures look in black.  The darker the shade of hair, the less offensive black is, but it’s not the best because at the end of the day, it does not enhance features.

Non-Black Alternatives

Do:

  • Wear your eye color
  • Wear shades that are similar in contrast to your hair…for example, lighter red hair can wear a lighter shade of grey

Avoid:

  • Bright colors that will overpower your features
  • Matching too closely to your skin color
  • Black near your face
