Tut, Jewelry Trends & Other Gasp-Worthy Artifacts

April 12, 2011

Before & After

The King Tut exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota was impressive – from the grand entrance to the gorgeously displayed artifacts.

And the goodies in the post-exhibit shop were pretty awesome too (photo credit: @princesssushi).

This post is dedicated to one of the most stylish exhibits I have ever experienced.

Ancient Jewelry

The gold finger “stalls” were part creepy and part compelling. I mean, who needs fake nails when you can have fake gold fingertips?  Never mind that these are for burial purposes…

And the jewelry was beautiful in all its gold glory. It’s no wonder we have so much great jewelry to choose from, after seeing these inspiring pieces.

I was completely enamored with the mega-sized sculptures – it’s hard not to gasp when a human form is reconstructed twice the normal size.

And the teeny, tiny sculptures were also gasp-worthy with all the detail worked in to such small figures.

The payoff at the end of the exhibit – a replica of King Tut’s mummified body – was intense and almost beautiful considering it’s from over 3,000 years ago.

Thank You

Special thanks to the Science Museum of Minnesota (@sciencemuseummn) for the opportunity to preview and take photos of this exhibit, which did a remarkable job giving an art gallery-like feel to how the items were displayed.

Good Bye Ironing, Hello Steaming

April 8, 2011

I despise ironing.  No, really.  I have a huge list of things I would rather be doing than ironing.  And the lackluster results of a $50 iron and new ironing board are a constant reminder of my frustration.

A few years ago, I bought a handheld version and thought “wow, this is what all the buzz is about?”  Needless to say, the results were pretty awful.

But, I decided to keep an open mind and had more conversations with people who really love their steamers.

Enter, my new steamer, which arrived last week:

SteamFast SF-407 1500-Watt Fabric Steamer

What I love about this steamer:

  • It took me less than 5 minutes to unpack and set up.
  • The steamer heats up within 30 seconds, ready for use.
  • It has produced great results in a short amount of time with silk and cotton items.
  • It doesn’t take up an extraordinary amount of space (I have it set up in my bathroom, right by my closet).
  • It has a little spot for a hanger at the top to hang the item I am steaming.
  • It comes with a pad that serves as a mini board to steam against while protecting my hand from heat.
  • It has wheels so if I accidentally pull it, it moves instead of tipping.
  • Who doesn’t love (and completely believe) the Good Housekeeping seal of approval?!

Have a look at the SteamFast SF-407 1500-Watt Fabric Steamer on Amazon.com.

If you have a product or service you think is worthy of a review, let’s talk!

CBS Local/Minnesota – Best of Shopping Lists

March 21, 2011

I am so excited to be blogging for CBS Local!  And this has been an excellent excuse to get out and do what I do best – shop.

From local boutiques and shops to national chains, I am putting these lists together based on my personal experiences.  Whether it’s shopping undercover like a regular customer or talking to business owners, the Best Of lists are thanks to my car, my feet and Google Maps.

Here are the most recent Best of lists I put together:

And here are a few from the past:

Have a list suggestion or a store recommendation?  Do tell!
