Top Style Picks for the 2011 Academy Awards

WHAT STOOD OUT?

Fabuliss Oscar Picks 2011

There were four red carpet winners of the night.  From left to right, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Helen Mirren and Natalie Portman.

Silhouette is a major part of why I selected these picks.  Each one looks like an hourglass, whether they are one or not.  The fact that they’re simulating that body type is incredibly appealing.

The other reason these made the list is color.  While there could be a little improvement, overall they are on the right track.

WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?

All lovely ladies, these dress choices didn’t quite work.  Some were more off than others based on color, silhouette and texture.

LASTLY, A FEW WORDS ABOUT NUDE COLORS

Fabuliss Nude = Naked

I am not sure who decided nude tones were trend-worthy.  Based on these examples from the red carpet – Hailee Steinfeld, Florence Welch, Mandy Moore and Hallee Berry – the nude tones make the faces stand out but they look naked and almost corpse-like instead of vibrant and alive.

Who were your favorites and what would you suggest for red carpet style?

Color, Fit & Faves from the 2011 Golden Globes

January 17, 2011

I love it when Hollywood comes together, dressed to the nines…I live vicariously through them and their gowns, tuxedos and jewels.

On top of that, their choices are fascinating to me – from colors to styles.  At this time, I don’t aspire to dress these Hollywood celebrities but surprise, surprise, I have opinions about what they’re wearing.

FAVORITES

My favorite women of the night – Sofia Vergara, Anne Hathaway & Catherine Zeta-Jones – selected great colors for the skin tones and project an hourglass shape, which is ideal for women.  Notice how none of these women are wearing black or revealing too much skin.

In terms of the men, I loved the check pattern on Ricky Gervais‘ suit jacket.  When he later appeared in a suit vest, the detail on the collar of his shirt was very classy.  Other wins – Johnny Depp because his tux jacket demonstrates the ideal for men’s body shapes (inverted triangle); Chris Colfer because his fitted suit was perfect from head-to-toe, including how his pant gently breaks above his shoe; Justin Bieber because he has a great sheen on his tux, is wearing a 3-piece tux and his tennis shoes are age-appropriate.

COLOR

These are highlights in terms of who wore their best colors.

  • Juliana Marguelis: The black and pick dress, while a little bridesmaid & simple for me, was a brilliant choice for her color palette.
  • Anne Hathaway: The mix of cool and warm colors in her dress work with her warm hair/eyes and cool skin.
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones: Emerald green is just stunning on her.
  • Mila Kunis: Her cool hair and warmer skin tone put her in a neutral zone, which looks great in this green.
  • Halle Berry: Warm skin tones, warm eyes and really dark hair with a hint of warm highlights looks “wow” in black.
  • January Jones: She chose a great red for her dominant cool colors.
  • Julianne Moore: Find a close-up of her from the Golden Gloves.  The tone of her necklace and dress were to die for with her hair/eye/skin.
  • Mandy Moore: Not everyone loved her color choice but she stood out and it was a great match for her.
  • Angelina Jolie: The brighter green stood out from the emerald greens and looked really nice on her colors.
  • Sofia Vergara: Love.

BODY SHAPES

While the smallest percentage of women have hourglass shapes, it is the most ideal body type for women in America.  Sofia Vergara, Christina Aguilera & Catherine Zeta-Jones all look amazing by accentuating their waists and keeping their shoulders and hips balanced.

If you were not born with the hourglass shape, there are definitely ways to make your body look like an hourglass.

Sandra Bullock, Halle Berry, Julianne Moore & Michelle Williams all fell short in terms of creating an hourglass shape.  These dresses all reinforce their shapes instead of creating a curvier shape.  A dress that broadens the shoulders and hips equally would be more flattering on a rectangle.

Triangles need to balance their narrow shoulders with their hips.  Kyra Sedgwick needs more oomf at her shoulders and less volume around her hips while Tina Fey needs to tone down the shoulders just a tad for a better balance.

Emma Stone’s shapeless dress needs more volume at the hips to balance out her shoulders.  And frankly, I like her much better as a red head.  Elisabeth Moss gets an A+ in terms of dressing her inverted triangle shape – she looks balanced and beautiful.

OUTFIT CONSIDERATIONS

The next time you are getting dressed for a big event, consider the following:

  • Will you blend in or stand out?
  • Are you wearing your outfit…or is it wearing you?
  • Are you over-sharing your assets?
  • How does your outfit work with your body type?
  • Does your color choice work with your hair, eyes and skin tone?
